“We commonly do not remember that it is, after all, always the first person that is speaking. I should not talk so much about myself if there were any body else whom I knew as well.” — Henry David Thoreau

I’m staring to come to believe that, in order for my students to be aware of the reef and all of its creatures, they must first be aware of themselves. We are not separate entities from our surrounding environment; rather, we are all a part of a greater system. If you do not know yourself, how can you know what your relationship is to the reef?

If you do not know the reef on which your food is caught, how can you know yourself?
